Cleaning travertine tiles yourself can be simple…

Although, you should know what you are dealing with. Once you have learnt the essentials of travertine and what Travertine is, the “How To” guide detailed below will have your keeping your travertine sparking clean for decades.

Don’ts

We don’t recommend using: generic, store-bought cleaning products of ANY kind. Cleaning travertine with products bought at your local store that contain acids, alkali, and chemicals not meant for natural stone can etch, damage and dull the tile surface and strip the sealer you’ve likely applied, leaving the stone vulnerable to staining which may be unreparable.

This might not happen immediately, but attempting to save money through using generic products on your Travertine Tiles ensures that you will  spend more of your effort, money and precious time on your natural stone maintenance in the future, when it can be made so simple for you now, avoiding the need to perform repairs or travertine restoration which can be costly.

Products such as vinegar, ammonia, lemon or orange are not recommended for cleaning travertine.
Instead, we commend you use a sponge with hot water and a stone cleaner are suitable for natural stone. Why waste your money and effort when you don’t need too?

Generic bathroom, tub & tile or grout cleaner can damage your stone. The powders and even the “soft” creams can be abrasive and stripping. You want to avoid products with any form of grit, as this may scratch and dull your tile surface. Only products specially formulated for cleaning travertine tiles.

Placing oily and coloured toiletries on your travertine is a common mistake… avoid placing products directly on your countertop surface wherever possible. Hair products, toothpaste, perfumes, colognes, nail products, creams, lotions, and potions may stain or damage the surface or etch the finish leaving a dull spot or ring. Think of your stone as a sponge, if you put black hair dye on a sponge, it is going to soak it up. Your travertine tiles are just the same.

Do’s

We recommend that you blog up spills immediately. As noted your travertine tile is sensitive like a sponge, and doesn’t like acidic substances like wine, coffee, fruit juices, tomato sauce, sodas, toiletry products and cleaning products that can etch (dull) the finish (on both shiny “polished” and matte “honed” finishes) or stain the surface.

Clean surfaces using a sponge or soft cloth. The only cleaning supplies you should use on a regular basis are hot water to wipe up crumbs and small messes and then a stone cleaner as your feel required for those unavoidable bigger messes.

Try to use a tray for toiletry products in the bathroom. A decorative tray can look very nice and as a added bonus, protect the surface from the damaging chemicals contained in many toiletry products.

Dust and mop your travertine floor tiles regularly. Use a clean, dry, non-treated dust mop. Be cautious when using a vacuum cleaner. Worn parts or grit jammed by the wheels may scratch the surface. And mop regularly using a specialized stone floor cleaner.
